What does a Doula actually do?
Recognizes birth as a key life experience that the mother will remember for the rest of her life. Assists the woman and her partner in preparing for and carrying out their plans for the birth.Understands both the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor.
Stays by the side of the laboring woman through the entire labor process. Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures, and an informed, objective viewpoint, providing the woman with the information she needs to make wise decisions.
Provides massage and other non-pharmacological pain relief measures during the labor process. Facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner and clinical care providers when necessary. Perceives her role as one who empowers the woman and protects her memory of her birth experience.
